The ART of RECYCLING - WIP

I've just begun a new painting on a piece of recycled canvas. Sometimes good ideas don't reach completion. Time changes everything. A flying peacock-airship will thus become a portrait of a man with a very tremendous opinion of himself and a very bad one of the rest of humanity, especially women, minorities and pretty much anyone else.

First step: outline drawing and background area colour. 

Let's see what happens next.

GREAT LEADER MAO TSE TUNG - WIP 2

Another step in the painting process of my Mao Tse Tung' portrait. Today is the day details must be added to the basic field colours. Details might somehow contradict the overall stylization of the figure, but will still contribute to the painting's final mood and personality by supplying much more information about the portrayed character.

Some of the original turquoise hue will still show through the colour gaps, making all surface tones more vibrant, especially in the red and skin coloured areas.

After this one is finished, I'll start working on  a new portrait. My sketch is already done and the canvas is taut.

GREAT LEADER MAO TSE TUNG - WIP

Having some fun with history: on the day that a new President has been confirmed in the US, I have begun work on a portrait of one of the "Great leaders" of the XX century.
The subtitle of the series is going to be "In the name of progress".

EINSTEIN, BOHR e CASA MIA su L'INDICE

Un altro interessantissimo articolo accompagnato da una delle mie opere su L'Indice dei libri del mese, di maggio. Questo, di Mario Ferrao parla della pluridecennale discussione in corso nell'ambito della fisica, per dare un'interpretazione deterministica o probabilistica della realtà attraverso le teorie della relatività e della meccanica quantistica ben incarnate nelle figure di Albert Einstein e Niels Bohr. Per chi è interessato a questi argomenti che, in fondo, parlano anche di noi e della nostra esistenza, può cercare l'articolo: "Le posizioni classiche sulla teoria dei quanti - Concezioni probabilistiche e deterministiche delle leggi di natura".

Si potrebbe meglio comprendere e forse farsi una ragione del fatto che alcuni di noi vivano in una bettola e altri in un castello.

MISTERO degli 8 CONIGLI su L'INDICE

'Il mistero degli otto conigli', una mia opera che e' stata scelta per essere inserita in un bellissimo articolo di Luca Bugnone su L'Indice dei libri del mese di maggio.
L'articolo intitolato "Scimmie fiacche, cavallette bonarie e locuste fameliche allo zoo (I saperi, la vocazione narrativa e i progressi dell'Homo Sapiens), parla di noi che, come esseri umani, abbiamo qualche problema di percezione della realta'. La nostra interpretazione del mondo che conosciamo, ci porta a chiuderci in uno zoo autocostruito, divisi in gabbie dove ci chiudiamo da soli a seconda del gruppo di appartenenza, rimuovendo cio' che sensi e scienza ci dicono. 
Un po' come dei conigli abbagliati dalla Luna.

STILL LIFE of a STILL LIFE...

This is probably the very first Still life of a still life painting ever taken*.
Art historians will talk about something else for generations to come.
Nevertheless this audacious artistic act is very improtant in these days of doom and gloom, because it helps distracting from the constant thoughts  about the pandemic and the free-roaming words of so many unqualified politicians.
Well in Fufi we trust.
And in Albers, too...

FRIDAY 13's FAKE NEWS in COVID-19 TIMES!

Well, in very weird historical times like these, where Presidents, politicians and self-proclaimed experts make very surreal and baseless claims about any issue, it's about time I start creating my very own copyrighted fake news:

"CHILI PEPPERS PREVENT CONTAGION!

My latest study clearly shows a 100% decrease of the Covid-19 among those who regularly consume large quantities of Red-Hot Chili Peppers, be that through assuming the vegetable itself or by listening to the famous rock band's merry grooves or both. Let's not forget also that in Southern Italy a red 'peperoncino' is a certified lucky charm..."

Venus from everywhere - 7
There's a new virus in the air, but we often forget that society has been affected for thusands of years by a more serious problem called misogyny.
Fortunately things are improving somehow also thank to young ladies such as Malala Yousafzai and Greta Thunberg and the 'Me too' movement.
So happy Woman's Day(s), and let's work together to make up for such a long time spent creating a world made mostly for men.

ALBER's GARDEN - WIP

Josef Albers (1888-1976) left a wide range of experimental work which is worth our attention.
Among his drawings there's a beautiful b/w lynocut on the interaction of line and space, called 'Runde' (Circle).
Well, I've tried to figure out how such a gentle abstract concept might be transformed into a tridimensional landscape.
Here's a detail of such work in progress with a semi-cubist Fufi waiting for a good reason to act.

STILL LIFE with FUFI in ALBER's ROOM - WIP 2

The final act on my new painting with Fufi the puppy in a still life in Albers' room. I am applying a layer of translucent oil colour, in this case Schminke's Raw Sienna and Sap Green mixed with some Liquin to further enhance paint's flow and transparency.
Applying a light transparent layer of oil gives the whole scene a more reassuring and romantic, pictorial feeling. All colours come together better. In real life this happens naturally, because sunlight influences all colours in different ways according to the time of the day. 
As when I used to paint by airbrush, also with this technique there's always a surprise at the end of the process.

My ARTWORK on ARTFINDER!

I have just opened my new artstore on Artfinder. There you may find a few paintings in the series "My ball, my game", dedicated to the beautiful sport of hockey, no, volleyball maybe? Hide and seek, baseball...I am not sure. Well there's a ball involved, plenty of feet and kicks and occasional loud screams when the sphere passes through a sort of gate.

The POPULAR RED HORSE of the POPLARS

A new work (in progress) this time painted on a slice of a walnut tree which had to be felled because ill.
Cutting a maybe 70 or 80 years old tree is always a sad thing. Part of it will be burnt in a fireplace during Winter. This remaining slice will probably decorate that very fireplace where the rest will end up in smoke. CARPE DIEM...

The Popular Red Horse of the Poplars is inspired by one of those tales that appear in dreams and no-one knows where they come from.

I met a man, a gentleman. It was a short time ago, on a Sunday, around noon.
We spoke of his country, a beautiful island, a pearl of the Orient, he sang sweet Italian songs, we ate food from both our countries and cheered together with the other friends we were dining with.
Later I showed him my works and we stopped before this one.
It was an allegory of our encounter. I found out how much I like this painting that I rediscovered and looked with different eyes from those who had seen it painted.
Indeed, after a while, art doesn't belong anymore to the moment and the artist who brought it into existence.
He liked it too, for reasons which are not for me to fathom.
In a moment when art is considered more as an investment than for the pleasure it may offer to our daily lives, it's good to know that from now on someone else will enjoy it, too.

PIG in the TREE

A new small painting is close o completion. 
The little red swine is double checking that I and everyone else here are going to vote for the European elections later today.
In some countries vote is mandatory, while in others people don't like to participate and take responsibility.
That's really a pity. It's taken centuries for common citizens to earn the right to have a say. I think we should all take the opportunity.

FLOWER

Very often we are so distracted by our lives' routine that we don't see or forget what's really important for us.
This old work of mine was meant to be the cover for a single of the band I used to play in. It's simply called: "Flower", music and lyrics by Antonello Brogna, played by Lapsus.
