HISTORY IX - 1492 Colombo Cristoforo - Columbus Christopher

MCDXCII

To Columbus Christopher as he showed the way to three caravelles that, from Spain departed, had lost their way, and helped them find it so they may follow their quest of discovery across the seas. The grateful citizenry placed . MCDXCII

“With the map upturned in order that could not discriminate its upper and lower sides, the great Admiral decided to stay his course notwithstanding the uncertain position of the stars insomuch that the way was thus lost. In his memorial of this enterprise, such event was then forgotten with the help of 1,300 maravedis per soul, so that the posterity wouldn’t know of our shame to be heading for discovery and pitifully lost in known lands, not of the Indies, our destination in nomine Regis, but rather of Lombardy, a land of cheese and swine, a destination for poets, literates and boors, not to be sailed to soaring the open waves of the oceans.”
Sancho Ruiz, pilot aboard the Santa Maria in his death-bed confession to Fra’ Biago from Sestri Levante.
